Labour MPs Revolt Over Shabana Mahmood’s “Performative Cruelty” Asylum Crackdown

The Labour government is facing intensifying internal backlash as home secretary Shabana Mahmood prepares to unveil the most sweeping overhaul of Britain’s asylum system in a generation — a move some of her own MPs are branding “performative cruelty” designed to chase Reform UK voters.

Tension erupted across the Labour backbenches on Monday as Mahmood confirmed plans to rewrite how the UK interprets key human rights protections, including the right to family life under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). She is also set to outline a fundamental rewrite of how Britain grants refuge to those fleeing conflict and instability, delivering a major Commons statement on Monday afternoon that could define the government’s approach to migration for years to come.

The proposals arrive during a moment of political turbulence for Labour, with internal divisions sharpened by fears that Reform UK’s hard-line immigration stance is pulling public sentiment further to the right.

The controversy deepened further when Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch weighed in, offering her party’s backing to Mahmood’s crackdown. Speaking to reporters during a visit to Buckinghamshire, Badenoch said:
“What we are seeing from the Labour government is steps in the right direction, so we want to encourage them in that right direction.”

She added that Conservative immigration policy was “more comprehensive”, but welcomed Labour’s shift, noting that “their backbenchers don’t like this, so I have offered that we will support the government in going in the right direction.”
